I was just trying to make it with Steve Stoute! Nas
Nas recently dropped his Life is Good Album and its been on heavy rotation these past few days. The net has been buzzing and I cant wait to head to the barbershop to talk about this. Isn’t it crazy how dope the conversations are at the barbershops? There will definitely be comparisons thrown around, a few who’s better type of questions and emotions will fly. However; I doubt anyone will down play the caliber of this album. As usual Nas came with it with his lyrical story telling abilities and was reminiscent of the Nas from the 90′s. Over all I liked the album, the production was on point and the features worked out well. With the help of Rap Genius lets look at a few tracks and pull some quote worthy material.
What a way to start the album. The second the beats drop you instantly feel that Nas is going to give us something special. The track had an old school vibe but it was one of the best on the album. The whole track seems like he really wanted to highlight that it wasn’t easy but hes made it, which is inspiring as hell. He starts off with “PS 111 had free lunch, embarrassed but managed to get a plate. We was kids hungry Mom’s working, I was famished She getting home late. So I decided now I’m in charge, either stay full or starve” Such a deep line. Growing up in the Bronx, I have friends that exemplify this line. Watching the struggles first hand, then seeing those same friends attempt to take over the world is crazy. You know how they say where there’s a will there’s way? Its true. He ends the track with “The craziest things already happened to me, so either you’ll be laughing at me or you’re laughing with me, ha!” A poster worthy quote, when working on your business or idea you will fail a few times. Consider that your worst of times, learn from them and laugh later when your running things!
Life is Good’s second track continues right where the first track left off. It had a a 90′s vibe to it which really draws you in. Once again the production was on point and Nas spit effortlessly on this track. Classical Nas in my opinion. He spits “I know you think my life is good cause my diamond piece, but my life been good since I started finding peace.” We all want to make enough money to give us financial freedom, but how much do you need to be happy? Many successful people proclaim that the money didn’t make them happy. For me, I am much happier now that I have a family, and am working on projects that I love. The money is a by product but nothing replaces time with the family. That is peace to me but to others peace can be anything else. Just have to identify it then pursue it.
Many have Thrown in a few verses dedicated to Donald Trump, but Nas did it in a very personal way. Actually played with Trumps previous money issues and compared it with his own life issues. He said “I been rich longer than I been broke, I confess I started out broke, got rich, lost paper then made it back. Like Trump being up down up, play with cash!” How many of or favorite business figures can claim the same. Some investments pay off others have crushed them, but they always find a way to come back. Sir Trump will always go down as one of the best that ever did it.
You Wouldn’t Understand
Another 90′s styled track. I wasn’t a big fan of it but one verse really stood out to me. I have been a Nas fan since early on and have witness his successes in music and a few slip ups with acting and his Esco clothing brand. When was the last time you saw an Esco shirt? Any way, that’s why I loved his line “Like a old BK gangsta, but I’m the CEO of Nasty Nas Enterprises, mastermind, made men.” It brings back memories of walking down my block thinking about being a CEO one day. Being CEO isn’t enough now, being a successful business owner is what I’m striving for now. He went on to say “My success symbolizes loyalty, great friends, dedication, hard work, routine builds character!” Many of our business heroes say the same thing. Building the proper team of supporters, working hard and dedication can take you a long way. Not one successful person has said they woke up one day as a successful person. They all worked hard for it. Then he spit “Never make choices out of desperation, I think through it.” How many times have we made the wrong decision due to the pressure? It happens to the best of us, but its a habit you want to avoid as much as possible. Feeling out of it or feel like you have your back against the wall? Take a few minutes and listen to music or do something else you like. That choice will still be there when you get back, you will feel worse if you rush it and make the wrong decision.
I’m glad Nas made this album. Was it his best? At times it was but it was definitely an enjoyable listen. It took me back to when hip hop was more about lyrical story telling and less about the cash, cars, etc. As a hip hop fan I will take a Nas album any day and hope there’s more to come.
